We began by reiterating ideas that we had actually already come up with. Our initial idea was to have a monster/demon character chase 2 guys down an alleyway whilst another beast trapped the human characters from the other side all had seem lost.
Whilst this idea had been on the rise, we had started putting together a sculpt of the 2 beasts, invested R&D time into dynamics and rigging, taken texture photos around the area, sculpted one of the live action actors to be dismantled and shot the background plate, and then decided to switch to the footage provided. All was not lost. You see, our project scope just expanded 10x fold and (maybe I’ll be eating my words in 7 weeks time) but our ambition is going to be the reason for our success.
A few initial concept sculpts of beast1 by Damien and beast2 by Brad.

An initial reference guide of what our shot would consist of put together by Chuong.

This is a dynamics and match move test of the footage we took ourselves courtesy of James and Chuong.

Using the new footage did not mean that we had to change concepts, although we have decided to not use any actors, a lot of our time had not been wasted. We decided to use both beasts in the new footage, add another mech, a jet carrier, a full CG bridge that will be hit by missiles, and possibly the inclusion of a building in the background that will get destroyed.

Some quick paint overs of the supplied footage.
OK, so perhaps the way I describe it sounds like it is definitely over ambitious, but having worked with half of the team before and seeing how the rest of the team can perform, the quality of talent is unbelievable and the group has bonded over many lunches and dinners outside of class. Though only time can tell whether or not we will be successful in the project, currently all things are looking up!
